Top inspiring Bollywood and Hollywood movies to watch on International Women’s Day 2021

International Women’s Day is marked every year on March 8. As the pandemic hits women disproportionately hard, this year’s event is vital. But how can you celebrate in the new normal?

This International Women’s Day, Trending News Cast have compiled a list of inspiring Bollywood and Hollywood movies that celebrate the passion and resilience of independent women.

Iron Lady (2011)


Meryl Streep is considered one of the greatest actors in Hollywood and her role as Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady is truly unforgettable. The autobiographical drama film follows Thatcher from her early years striving hard to break gender and class barriers to become the first female prime minister of England.



Chhapaak is the story of acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, who was attacked by a known person at the age of 15. Deepika Padukone performed her role brilliantly and is the soul of the movie. Chhapaak tells the inspiring story of Laxmi who started campaigns to prevent acid attacks and also filed a PIL to stop acid sale in India. The movie directed by critically-acclaimed filmmaker Meghna Gulzar. This is a must-watch this International Women’s Day.

Eat Pray Love (2010)


Based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir of the same name, Eat Pray Love centres on a married woman (Julian Roberts) who realises how unhappy her life is despite having everything a modern woman is supposed to dream of having—a successful career, husband and a house. She decided to take a leap of faith and take a journey around the world to search for what she truly wanted from life and her real identity.



Another milestone for women-centric films in India, Pink, starring Taapsee Pannu and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles gives a strong message on sexual harassment and abuse. Pink tells us why ‘NO’ means ‘NO’ and how it is mandatory for a man to ask for a women’s consent before he comes close to her.

Carol (2015)


Queer romance is a genre that rarely features women, which is the reason why this Academy-acclaimed movie is so revolutionary. This moving, beautifully acted drama explores the intimate relationship between Carol (Cate Blanchett), a glamorous, dignified woman going through a broken marriage; and Therese (Rooney Mara), a young photographer on the verge of sexual awakening.



Taapse Pannu’s recent film which talks about the topic of domestic violence is a hard-hitting and thought-provoking which was single-handedly carried by Taapsee on her shoulders. Not only her breakthrough performance in the film is getting critical acclaim, but fans also salute her courage to take up such a sensitive topic and gives a strong message on how women who face domestic violence should raise their voice.

Erin Brockovich (2000)


Erin Brockovich is a American biographical legal drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Susannah Grant. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Erin Brockovich, portrayed by Julia Roberts. An unemployed single mother becomes a legal assistant and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city’s water supply.



Starring Vidya Balan in the lead role, Kahaani is the story of a pregnant, alone woman searching for her husband. However, this is not it. It is the story of courage, will and a women’s strength of never giving up. The film shows how a woman, who has once decided, can go to any extend for her loved ones. With a path-breaking performance by Vidya Balan and terrific direction by Sujoy Ghosh, Kahaani has to be on your list.

English Vinglish


The movie English Vinglish starring Sridevi in the lead was a story of a woman Shashi who is often mocked for her poor English skills by her husband and kids. Gauri had perfectly captured the emotions, pain and confusion of Shashi who felt disrespected time and again by her loved ones and her will to learn English to gain her self respect.



The Panga is a sports film directed and co-written by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and produced by Fox Star Studios. Kangana Ranaut and Jassie Gill star in the lead roles. The movie narrated the story of a former Kabaddi player who took a sabbatical from the game and got engrossed in her ghar-grihasti. However, she decides to get back in the game after a couple of years on the insistence of her husband and son and thus begins her journey of breaking the stereotypes about a married woman playing on the ground. The movie was a motivational for every women.


Mardaani is a action thriller film starring Rani Mukerji, with Jisshu Sengupta, Tahir Raj Bhasin and Saanand Verma in supporting roles. Pradeep Sarkar directed and Aditya Chopra produced  the movie. The story about Shivani Shivaji Roy, a policewoman whose interest in the case of a kidnapped teenage girl leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking by the Indian mafia
