Oscars 2021: Anthony Hopkins, Frances McDormand win top honours; Irrfan Khan, Bhanu Athaiya remembered

The 93rd Academy Awards took place on Monday, April 26, 2021. As opposed to how the world is operating these days owing to the coronavirus scare, the Academy decided to conduct a non-virtual ceremony of the biggest movie awards. The Oscars were held at two locations in Los Angeles this year – Union Station and Dolby Theatre. All nominees and guests had undergone a minimum of two Covid-19 tests and thus, were not required to wear a face mask while the cameras are rolling.

Leading the ceremony this year was ‘Mank’ with 10 nominations, followed by six nominations each for The Father, Judas And The Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Here are the highlights –

Creating History

American actor Anthony Hopkins won Oscars 2021 Best Actor award for his work in ‘The Father’. The 83-year-old created history by becoming the oldest actor to win the Best Actor award at Oscars. On the other hand, Nomadland’s director Chloe Zhao became the first woman of colour to win the Best Director award at the Oscars.

Special mention of Indian celebs

The Academy remembered Indian actor Irrfan Khan along with costume designer Bhanu Athaiya in their special ‘In Memoriam’ section. Their names flashed on the big screen alongside Sean Connery, Chadwick Boseman, Olivia de Havilland, Kirk Douglas, and Barbara Windsor among others.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas give it a miss

Speculations were rife that actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her musician husband Nick Jonas will be presenting at the Oscars 2021. However, the couple wasn’t seen during the ceremony. Priyanka is currently in the UK due to her work commitments and she thought it was best to avoid travelling during this sensitive time.
