Freelance Journalist Mandeep Punia picked up by Delhi Police, claim Farmers’ Leaders; ask for immediate release

The Delhi Police on Saturday allegedly detained freelance journalist Mandeep Punia in the national capital, media reports said.

According to the media reports, the cops forcefully picked up journalist from the national capital and a video also went viral on social media.

After the viral video, the friends of journalist posted about his detaining news on social media platforms and asking for release. Mandeep is working as freelance in magazine. He completed his studies from Punjab University, Chandigarh.

Protesters and farm leaders have demanded release of the journalist.

Farm leader Yogendra Yadav tweeted: “Just not done. I have known Mandeep to be a passionate and committed journalist. Picking up someone like him, without any legal basis, is another instance of growing threat to free media. Release Mandeep Punia immediately.”

Dr Vinee Punia, Secretary (Communication), Indian National Congress, also tweeted that “Journalist #MandeepPunia has been ‘detained’ by Delhi Police. I am informed by some journalist friends that he is being accused under 186 IPC (obstructing public servant in the discharge of his public functions). I will tell you how he was obstructing the @DelhiPolice”
